So imagine how in awe I am every day to get to come spend my work day with costumes crafted by Edith Head, Irene, Travis Banton, Howard Greer and contemporary, Colleen Atwood. This exhibition is an incredible work of art for anyone- not just me because I aspire to be a costume designer.
There's something so magical about being in a room with garments that took so much time and effort to come to fruition. Think about the time put into mounting the exhibition. We had 3 weeks in-between our exhibitions. In that turnaround- our Exhibition team, painted, moved interior walls, changed lighting and then set up costumes and jewelry and there you have it. The costumes were repaired and mannequins dressed. Not only restoration, but to think about the original plan for the garment. There's the idea and then a sketch, then the meeting with the director and then the seamstresses and the fittings and the beading.
To look at these costumes, years later and they're still in such incredible shape is astounding. Then to see the work put into these pieces that either barely got any screen, had literally no screen time or always completely obstructed from few- in a time when we buy cheap and in bulk and just throw things out no fear of cutting corners.
There are these costumes to remember quality over quantity.
