WCW: Abby Zerull Meets World

It's Wednesday! Meet today's #WCW!

She's one of my FABULOUS sorority sisters & currently Omega's VP of Administration. She's also the secretary of the Communications Committee for the University of Akron. Not to mention a proud member of the Ohio Democratic party. She's also one of the Captains of the Speech and Debate team. Perhaps one of her proudest feats: a Starbucks Gold Card member [probably my most important membership of all].

I just adore her and I'm sure you will too!

Meet Abby!

Can you tell me about your background? School?

I’m currently a senior at the University of Akron, and I study Public Relations and American Politics. Before that, I was BGSU studying musical theatre.

Is this your sole job? If not, what else do you do?
Besides going to class, I also work at State Farm. I do a lot of administrative tasks, but I also help people apply for bank loans through State Farm. While it’s not a job, I’m also a member of the University of Akron’s Speech Team. With the amount of time I spend traveling, practicing, and preparing, it may as well be a full time job. But, I do love every second of it.

If you’re not doing it, what would your dream job be?

My dream job would easily be Press Secretary of the United States. I’m obsessed with politics and communications, so what better way to combine my two loves? I also would get a spacious office in the West Wing. THAT right there is #goals.

What can others learn from you?

I would say the biggest thing someone could learn from looking at my life is that you can always push yourself to go further. However, I think it’s also important to note that, once you find your boundaries, you should stick to them. Mental health is just as important as physical health. Do awesome things, but put yourself first.

How do you do under pressure? How do you handle stress?

I’m one of those borderline clinically insane people that thrives off of pressure and stress. I am most productive and efficient when there’s a deadline looming over my head. Typically, if the stress is too much to handle, I pull out my planner (which is larger than my head), and I write everything down in order of importance. Knowing exactly what I have to do offers a sense of clarity to my day, and to my life!

What’s the average day in the life of Abby look like?
A normal day in my life involves not enough sleep and way too much Starbucks. But it also involves going to classes, hanging out with my sorority sisters, and making sure my highlighter is always brighter than my future.

How did you advance your career?

Right now, I’m still working on the advancing part. I’m trying to build a firm foundation (aka an amazing resume) so that future employers will want to hire me as soon as they can. I take every opportunity that I can, within reason. I try to use those opportunities to network and build my skill set. The more variety, the happier I am.

How would you describe your personal style?

While my sorority sisters jokingly refer to my style as “Sexy Librarian Chic,” I prefer “Basic Business Casual with a Splash of Extra.” I’m a huge fan of “the bruise palette,” so anything with the colors blue, black, purple, or green in them. I love dressing up a simple outfit with gaudy jewelry (there’s your splash of extra). I’m also frequently found sporting my letters and my red Hunter Boots (that’s where the “basic” comes into play).

What makes up your wardrobe?

My wardrobe has a lot of plain, oversized shirts and fun and colorful pants. I’m also a huge sweater fan, since I’m cold 80% of the time. Scarves are also my BFFs.

Who is your fashion icon?

I have always idolized Diana Vreeland. She was a strong, feminist woman who took chances with fashion constantly. She was never boring, but always looked sophisticated and chic.

What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment?

I think my greatest accomplishment was deciding on my major in college. Growing up, I was determined to be a musical theatre major. I had started acting when I was five, so obviously I have a lot of experience in the theatre world. However, when I started out as a musical theatre major as a freshman, I quickly realized that this was NOT the career for me. It took a lot of bravery to walk away from a school I liked and a major that I felt confident in to a University I didn’t know and a major I knew even less about. But that experienced changed me for the better. I am a much stronger person now. Transferring schools is never easy, but looking back, if I would have stayed in my comfort zone I know that I would not be the happy and thriving individual that I am today. I discovered my true passion and purpose… Not every 21 year old is that lucky.

What is your ‘must have’ accessory?

My Fossil watch – I feel like I’m always running late, so when I don’t wear my watch I simply can’t function. It’s silver with a medium clock face and, of course, is rimmed with (fake) diamond studs.

What advice can you give others that look towards you to gauge success?

Don’t look to anyone else to gauge your success – look toward yourself! Did you do more than you did yesterday? Did you impact someone’s life? Did you refrain from buying a third Kat Von D Liquid Lipstick? Good for you! Build on your own success, because you know your story.

What advice can you give on failure?
You literally cannot be successful without failure. It’s impossible. No human being has EVER done something amazing on the first try. Take a second and be angry, be upset… But don’t you ever stop chasing your dreams if you know you want them.

MCM: Harry Meets World

It's Monday and I always start out with the best intentions ~ but I'm permanently in a Mon-daze.

Here's to the start of another week. Meet this week's MCM...

Fictional character be damned. Meet Harry Potter.

Unless you've been living under a rock the last 20 years- Harry Potter is the be all, end all of witchcraft and wizardry.

I began reading them in 3rd or 4th grade. They were the talk of the Northwood Elementary school blacktop.

A lot has changed in 20 years, but not the world's love of Harry Potter!

The Goonies said never say die for a reason after all.

Story Time with KJB: Dad Got Married!

As you likely know because you follow me on Instagram (you are right?!)- you saw that I attended a wedding the weekend before last. Here's a little back story.

All the way back in 2011, when Megan became my Big-- we realized that my best friend and her best friend were extremely close, they were sorority sisters after all and we had unknowingly been hearing stories about the other for weeks before we put it together. The Fall of 2011 and the Spring of 2012 had the four of us practically inseparable, meals were spent together, weekends, any time that we weren't in class or sleeping- we were together. Though to be far, Megan and Kristi (her best friend) were roommates and Rachel (my best friend) and I were practically roommates because we lived in the same dorm. We called ourselves a Panhellenic Family, Megan was Mom and Kristi was Dad. Rachel and I were obvi the children.

Fast forward to June 17, 2017 when our family grew because Kristi married Jordan. So now Rachel & I have a Step Mom!

This past Saturday, the wedding was in Caldwell, Ohio and it was beautiful.

Mother Nature blessed them with a beautiful day!

The wedding reception was in Cambridge, Ohio.

Two of the best people, I've had the pleasure of knowing, have found each other and gotten married and that's a beautiful thing.

DAD!

Jordan and Kristi had a beautiful wedding, full of love, family and friends. It was palpable.

Flashback Fashion Friday: Weekly OOTD Round-Up

Yet another week come and gone! But it's officially summer! I received my final grades for Class #2: 98%. I suppose that's not too shabby!

I was feeling my hair this week... So naturally, I was also feeling myself!

Here's what I wore:

Got back from the wedding weekend and changed my phone out of the LuMee case (Fun Fact: I bought this case while standing in line at TJ Maxx, it was only $19, I had to have it) and into my summertime Minnie & Emma case! The dress is a fave from Old Navy, it's extra comfy and has pockets! I tried out a middle part, and y'all it changed my whole vibe! Not to mention wore my wedding shoes, we're in love.

Tuesday:

Today, I wore my boss new blouse, I mean check out that bell sleeve! This top plus the middle part, I wanted to be walking around giving people peace signs! Like if I was into Halloween, I would be set for October! I also broke out the new shoes! Same as my wedding shoes but almost like a suede (ok, so they call it cognac)! To die for!

Right now they're a part of Buy One Get One for $5. You can't beat that!

Wednesday, it was hot and I wanted my hair out of my face- this is the best I could do and naturally halfway through the day when I went to put the whole thing up- my hair tie broke. This is why I have trust issues. Check it out- another pair of new shoes!

These shoes are incredibly comfortable and I've got tons of compliments! Also they're currently 40% off! Hurry, Hurry!

Thursday:

Another new blouse from TJ Maxx. It was a color I adore, not to mention extra comfy! Plus my cute tassel slides! Ya'll know I love these tassel Bauble Bar earrings (in Blush) I'm wearing too!

You can see that I'm wearing my favorite silver, rose gold & silver bangles... I think I need these(in rose gold/gold/silver).

Naturally, tons of rain, but my hair looks bomb. If only it were always this length and slightly curled. Obvi I love my Bauble Bar monogram (in Blonde Marble) and I'm wearing two of my Dreamland Jewelry rings(here & here)! Not to mention my wedding shoes, again- cause they're cute as hell, bomb af and comfy to boot!

I heard somewhere that it was National Pink Day. I don't know if it were true- seems odd for it to not be on a Wednesday (& wouldn't you know that was one of the two days I didn't wear pink either, amateur). But ya live and ya learn.

Cheers to the frickin weekend!

Flashback Fashion Friday: Wedding Attendee Attire

As y'all already know I attended a wedding last weekend! While everyday you should be feeling yourself, trust I was feeling myself something fierce- the cardinal rule of weddings: DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT WEARING WHITE.

Honestly people, if you're not the bride and haven't been asked by the bride to wear white- don't wear it, if that's all you have- 1. you're a liar. 2. stay home!

So knowing my close friends was getting married and I would being getting to take part- I knew I needed to find the perfect dress!

I searched high and low and came up with this dress from Lane Bryant. Naturally, though it had been hanging in my room for over a month, I didn't try it on until the day of, like an idiot... so imagine my surprise when my strapless bra and the dress combined wrapped itself around me the way a Boa constrictor might give you a hug.

So I eightysixed that bra hella fast, and to my delight- realized that the dress would do all the work! Yahtzee!

After the dress, I had to decide how I wanted my nails. Cause honestly- if you take one thing away from your interaction with me, it's that I LOVE NAILS! Love it (by the way, are you watching Claws?!)

So after much consideration- I decided on white nails. A summer staple. While I have a pretty steady hand- white nail polish is something, I personally don't think you can do yourself. So I went to the salon and got a Dip and Buff manicure. WORTH IT. I'm still obsessed and it's been over a week (10 days to be exact.)

After realizing my nails on my hands and toes would be white- it's really a polished look for your manicure and pedicure to match- HOT TIP. I knew that I needed black shoes.

So imagine my delight at finding these. Cute as hell and comfy too. Giving the dress some umphf without adding too much height.

Then came the jewelry... Unfortunately, there were no close-ups because I was already in route to the wedding before I realized I should've taken more photos (being I don't have an Instagram husband or boyfriend... my mother was at home and my friends give me a lot of shit).

Here are the earrings in white and in pink from Bauble Bar. I obvi wore white. I wore two rings from Dreamland Jewelry, my dirty little secret. You can see the rings here and here.

My make-up, ya know that make-up that I can count on one hand the amount of times I've worn it in 2017, was natural with my FAVORITE nude lip: Teddy from NYX Lingerie.

My purse was my favorite purchase from Target in while. I got it back in January for a sorority event.

So that's what I wore.

Flashback Fashion Friday: Weekly OOTD Round Up

Another one. *KHALED VOICE*
Sunday:

Sunday, I took Thomas to Pet Supplies Plus to get a bath! & then I went into work.

Monday:

Monday, I was feeling myself with this hair. I also LOVE this blouse from Target!

Tuesday:

Still feeling my hair and I adore this slides from Lane Bryant!

Wednesday:

Apparently, I Didn't Get the Hand on Hip Memo
Yup, I went and washed my hair... Does anyone else have that thing wear your hair looks incredible and then you have to wash it and question if it'll ever look that good again... yeah, no me neither.

Thursday:

Love these sleeves and love these Lane Bryant heeled sandal, even if I'm giving a fall vibe. So sue me. I also took off my white nail polish and without any color on my hands and feet- I feel nakey.

Friday:

Because I worked last Sunday, I was able to take today off... Then we're closed Monday AND Tuesday, so HELLLOOOOO FIVE DAY weekend! YESSSSSS

Not to mention, I'm going to TLC- so I'll only be at work on Wednesday next week, #blessed.

If you want to see what I'm wearing today- head over to Insta to check out what I'm wearing and what I'm doing on my day off!

Happy Weekend!

WCW: Courtney Ou Meets World

It's Wednesday, so it's time to meet this week's #WCW! Yesterday was this girl's 25th!

Meet Courtney Ou!

Can you tell me about your background? School?
I graduated from The University of Akron in December 2014 with a degree in Marketing Management and Supply Chain Management.

What do you do for a living? Tell me what lead you to this new endeavor?
I work in digital marketing with my main crafts being paid search, paid social, programmatic, and display media. About 2 months ago I quit my full time job to spend more time traveling and just living life while doing a little freelance work in my field on the side.

If you’re not doing it, what would your dream job be?
I’m always torn on exactly what my dream job would be, but I think it would combine my craft + travel + food and a little splash of non-profit/inspiring others.

How important is social media to your business?
Social media is a pretty big part of my business now that I am my business. I’m lucky enough that my professional brand and my personal brand are one in the same so there isn’t a whole lot of smoke and mirrors behind anything. My social media presence is authentically me and any business that drums up from it has to coincide with that.

What would you say is your personal brand is?
I think my personal brand is pretty open, blunt, and fun. I’m not really one to hold back and I’m always down for an adventure. I think that most people that know me would agree that that’s how I live and portray my world.

What can others learn from you?
I hope that others can learn a few things from me. Mainly: it’s ok to be unapologetically yourself ; if you’re going to bet on anything, it should be yourself ; life is too short to not make it one hell of an adventure

How do you do under pressure? How do you handle stress?
I think I work best under pressure, to the point where sometimes I have to create my own stress or pressure. I think it’s totally true that we create the best versions of ourselves when we push ourselves out of ruts and hard situations.

What’s the average day in the life of Courtney look like?
These days my “average” days are so over the place. It usually involves some combination of the gym, netflix, plotting a trip, and lots of food

Do you/Did you have a mentor/mentee?
I don’t think that there is necessarily one specific person in my life that I pinpoint as a mentor, but more-so every person I have encountered. Each person adds to your life in one way or another either forming your views, perceptions, skills, etc personally or professionally. I think it’s that ever-changing combo of people that really makes the impact.

How did you advance your career?
It’s always been all about networking and getting myself in the right place at the right time. I think I had like 8 different internships in college and each one broadened my network and built a different skill set. And then from there it’s all about busting your ass, proving yourself every day, and aligning yourself with the right people.

Why do you do what you do?
For awhile I was kind of bummed about the path I chose. I wondered why I didn’t push myself to do something more fulfilling or something that I deemed as a higher brain capacity field like becoming a surgeon. But then I realized that A) I would be miserable if I did that because that’s not my passion and B) that I’m actually pretty valuable at what I do. Once I realized that my career was an ACTUAL career and not a fallback career, I realized how much I love it.

How would you describe your personal style?
I’m all over the board. If it fits and it catches my eye, I wear it. These days I’m mostly in athleisure since it feels like I’m always at the gym or outdoors vs always being in the office. But even back then it was all about comfort aka leggings all day every day.

What makes up your wardrobe?
Everything imaginable lol

Who is your fashion icon?
I actually don’t think I have one!

What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment?
I don’t think my greatest accomplishment has happened yet. If I had to pick something though I think it would be taking the leap and quitting my cushy desk job at a top agency to just “live” for an undefined period of time. It was pretty ballsy and kind of strayed from my usual extreme Type A personality.

What is your ‘must have’ accessory?
I think my must have accessory is a good attitude. Because I can be moody AF and nothing good comes from that lol

What advice can you give others that look towards you to gauge success?
At the end of the day you have to figure out what makes you happy. And then fiercely chase that. I think that’s the best measure of success. Are you happy? Are you growing? If you can answer yes to both of those, then you’re succeeding in my book.

What advice can you give on failure?
It’s awkward and it’s painful, but it has to happen. That’s where all the growth comes from.

What was your big break?
I don’t know that I can really pin one thing as my big break. I just always tried to make a name for myself wherever I was and whatever life phase I was in whether it was UA, an organization, an internship, or work. Your brand carries you from there.

Are you a member of any organizations? Trade Organizations, etc.
I was super into all of that stuff in college, but fell off after that.

What’s next for you?

Only time will tell! The world is my oyster :)

Thanks Courtney!

Here's hoping 25 is a kick ass year!

xo,
KJB
