I didn't know a lot about Edith Head before my internship in 2014, but I know who she was- which is more than I can say for quite a few people, which is a travesty.
Costume Designer Edith Head once said "If it's a Paramount film I probably designed it." She doesn't even have to pretend to be humble. Her influence continues — immortalized both as a character in Pixar's The Incredibles, and today, as a Google Doodle tribute in honor of her 116th birthday. She was born October 28th, 1897 and died October 24th, 1981. She has a BA from UC Berkeley, and her Masters from Stanford University. She was a teacher before she went to work at Paramount Pictures in 1924, where she stayed until she went to Universal Studios in 1967.
Head, who used forged sketches in her interview for her job at Paramount, has become one of the most revered and idolized costume designers in cinema history. In her five decade career, she won eight Oscars; defined the legendary styles of Hitchcock's iciest blondes, Tippi Hedren and Grace Kelly; and added the quirk to Audrey Hepburn's most-replicated, classic all-American looks from Breakfast at Tiffany's, Sabrina, and Roman Holiday. And that's just the short list of her accomplishments. Name a classic film starring a female legend from the golden age of cinema, and she's likely felt the cool embrace of Edith Head's tape measure. She is credited for 444 movies, she has been nominated 35 times and has won 8 Oscars and she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
She's a fascinating woman and I highly suggest looking into her more!
At the end of this week, Edith Head & Company: Costumes and Jewelry, 1924-2015 will be returning home to Paramount Pictures Archives.
I hope you were able to come see the exhibition at The Decorative Arts Center of Ohio this summer or able to visit it online- because it would've been a terrible shame to miss it!
